PUTSCH - Ein immersives Theatergame

© Petra Moser

Imagine that you get an (almost) real internship in a (not quite so) real business. You sort documents, make coffee, someone is typing, calculating, making phone calls next to you. Everything is new to you, but you give it your best effort. With a mountain of papers you head towards the copy machine. Interesting, this is still something where people work analogue? Who needs all these copies? Someone calls for you, but there is no one there. Somewhere deep inside yourself you can hear a voice. It’s very quiet, but firm. “Don’t you know better?”

“PUTSCH” is an interactive theatre game in which the audience actively takes part as a member of the cast and dives into this strange office as a fictitious intern. During the performance individuality meets conformity – and offers the once in a lifetime chance to rebel against the workplace rules.

You can find magic in between the files and potted plants. Even the venue of this project is a special and unusual one: the offices of the Upper Austrian federal government are turned into a stage to create the space for this theatre game. The stories are told as if by magic, and the participants make their own very specific and individual experiences during the two hours of the performance. Because try-out interns see the life in the offices with unencumbered, fresh eyes – maybe they do not yet understand why everything works the way it does. But that this could be better is something that you can (and should) believe in.

The past productions “Part of the Game Game” and “Spaze Maze Game” made the group “Das Planetenparty Prinzip” from Graz a household name. In 2020 the “Planeten” were awarded the special award by the board of the ASSITEJ Austria.

New story telling in the framework of PlayOn!

“PUTSCH” is a project by PlayOn!, an EU Creative Europe funded project cooperation between nine theatres for young audiences and eight higher learning institutions from various countries – with many partners and friends with a background in theatre, performance, gaming, technology, and science. Together the institutes and theatres investigate how to tell new, utopian stories in the theatre through gaming elements and immersive technology, and how those stories can have a lasting effect outside of the theatre space.
