Close Encounters

© Nurith Wagner-Strauss

All the young people over here, all the adults over there – and in between you are “lost in translation”… Unless we all learn not to put our world view above everyone else’s. For the project “Close Encounters”, that was nominated for a Nestroy award, Anna Rispoli is able to create a space in which young people can address things that often stay hidden. Based on interviews with high school students and apprentices from a supermarket chain between the ages of 15 and 19, Rispoli weaves a text that breaks with roles and expectations. The audience is invited to recreate this dialogue in one on one encounters with the young people. By speaking along with the audio records, unheard voices become audible, and unknown ways of thinking become accessible. And while the words of other people are spoken by your own mouth an “expanded intimacy” - as Rispoli describes her practice – becomes possible. A surprisingly familiar experience!
