On Motherhood

© Rosa Knecht

The research based work on motherhood is often a long and lonely experience. When it comes to the visibility of mothers then art (history), as well as contemporary society often shows a woman that is supposed to take on many different roles and expectations; not least her own, what invariably leads to feeling overburdened and failure. A mattress, a measuring cup, fluids, and isolation. In this readymade setting, a post-partum island is created. The installation “On Motherhood” deals with the lack of sleep mothers experience, with the infection of breast glands, with the overwhelming responsibility to care for a baby. Everything sleeps, lonesomely wakes.

»As it stands, motherhood is a sort of wilderness through which each woman hacks her way, part martyr, part pioneer; a turn of events from which some women derive feelings of heroism, while others experience a sense of exile from the world they knew.« Rachel Cusk, A life’s work.
